Gross = Awesome.
It's very curious that The Waterloo Regional Children's Museum is now going by www.themuseum.ca but the website redirects to the WRCM site. I sense something sneaky going on.... and I know that there is already some drama going on with the outraged mom demographic of the region...
But let me be honest for a second, because i know that's why you come here, WHO GIVES A SHIT WHAT THE BUILDING IS CALLED?
Never got to the Warhol exhibit due to a (possibly karma induced) stupid injury that limited me leaving the house last winter... but heard mixed reviews. I'll probably hit up this sick body show... because really, gross = cool.
Dear "The Museum" -
Keep getting in cool shit that people WANT to look at. Then worry about what domain name to stick with.
Thanks,
H.

They've publicly said they're changing the name of the museum and that children's programs/exhibits will become just one component of a mix targetting a broader audience. So it's not that sneaky -- and they agreed with your assessment. Now the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery just needs to figure out that it has no future as a clay and glass gallery.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the Andy Warhol exhibit. The theme of inspiration and appropriation was really acessible and pretty interesting. The investments they made into the building to accomodate the pieces for that show were impressive.I attended a couple of the lectures that accompanied the show. It was likely a risk for them, I wonder if they felt like it paid off. From an outside perspective, it seemed to draw a new audience.
ReplyDeleteI thought Warhol was kinda empty and boring - The man and the cultural implication was more interesting than anything you can hang on a wall. I do hope that this exhibit challenges me more and maybe actually keeps the interest of the kids (hahah... pretty likely I think). I have heard the contention about having this here - the pieces being created of perhaps political dissenters in China (grizzly!!!) but point is, they are made. There is a lot of dialog about the validity of science produced under such conditions (disgusting fact - almost everything we know about hypothermia comes from Nazi experiments)... I am not sure where I stand quite yet on this one.
ReplyDeleteHey Gary - Thanks for your comment man, I did a quick search of the website for a press release stating the change, and couldn't find one... then i searched it on the Record's site, but couldn't find anything there either. Appreciate the update.
ReplyDeleteAny comment on this? http://www.facebook.com/pages/SAVE-OUR-CHILDRENS-MUSEUM/215427269917?ref=search&sid=586025104.21473084..1
i've seen the "Bodies" exhibit, and can testify to the presence and engagement of many a little whipper snapper. kids gotta get to know where their gonads actually dropped from, don't they?
ReplyDeletemaybe the WRCM can have little Play Doh stations between exhibits to keep Outraged Ma's 5 year old "stimulated".
You mean you didn't check my Delicious bookmarks first? :-) I'd paste the link here, but either the site or my computer is stopping me from pasting in the comment box. CKCO/CTVSWO ran a story on November 18 where it was pretty clear that a name change was on the way and that the audience was being expanded beyond children. The success of the Warhol exhibit was something they referred to. They just didn't want to alienate any donors who had contributed to a children's museum.
ReplyDeleteI see that Facebook group started around the same time, so it was probably a response to that report.
