Living Wage Debate

You know, maybe i'm not smart enough, or maybe just patient enough -
can someone concisely explain the Living Wage Debate to me?
or maybe to everyone on RQ? Would someone who understands the issue like to guest blog?

I've been reading this and this opinion piece on it - and i'm just not getting it.

Am i an idiot?
Feel free to comment.

Again, is it just me or does it feel like politicians are really lettin' the people down lately...
Prorogues... trying to keep the lake shitty... trying to defer important issues to the next council a year from now.... sketchy.

Bombs away.

  1. Concisely, the proposal is when the city puts out a contract, one of the conditions for companies bidding is that they have to pay their workers a "living wage" of $13.23/hour or more.

While that sounds great, as Jane points out, the side-effects get a little complicated and the city might be able to find better ways to improve the standard of living for people in Waterloo Region.

  2. Hey Darcy - thanks for the comment.
Totally get that... do you know how many people this actually effects in the region? Seems like i agree with Jane - that it does little to solve our overall issue of having residents living below the poverty line...
