I woke up - after a crazy imaginary adventure - knowing that all the things i had read the night before were irrelevant. And i was left thinking... what the fuck am i going to write about today?
Well, aside from the fact that i want to tell you how goddamn amazing this tuna sandwich is from Seven Shores, I came across some controversy today and I wanted to link through to This. An article in the Record and This article in the Chronicle, about how the Northdale area around the universities are turning into a.... wait for it... "ghetto".
The Flying Squirrel - talks about it HERE. Which is a passionate and awesome editorial on the subject. On his twitter, he asks the question - why not just work on a little better by-law enforcement, as opposed to re-zoning? As well as This commentary, by Ellen of Strange Attractor, who lives in Northdale, and has unfortunately never seen anyone fornicate on her sidewalk - argues that there really isn't a problem at all.
I went to high school in that area - and i would argue any day of the week, that we were more obnoxious neighbours to have than uni students.
Also, during September, P and I had the pleasure of seeing two undergrads piss on the front of the WLU Co-op Building on King St. and then crush their Coors Light beer cans on their foreheads and throw them into the bushes.... soo.... classic, but eww.
Maybe the focus should be on cultivating undergrads that aren't douchebags... as opposed to figuring out how to have more high-tech workers move into the area?
I would even argue that if the high tech employers of the region know that their employees (current and future) want to live in neighbourhoods that are within walking distance and close to shops, cafes, restaurants and other local culture (cough, downtown kitchener gentrification) - THEY should relocate their offices. Not expect the housing to come to them.
