Hmm, same guy who heads Waterloo's Library Board that fired Cathy Matyas, the head librarian, and is refusing to comment on the reasons for the firing.
ReplyDeleteThis will likely result in the Library having to shell out 100K in severance (if they are lucky).
Not sure this is a good choice as if certainly seems like Mr. Jackson is putting his ego in front of proper decision making these days.
Oh well, maybe it will work out.
I assume Mr. Jackson and the Library Board have not commented on the firing as it is not their obligation to do so. This may be out of respect for Cathy Matyas, or maybe not, but either way it is laughable that people who leave uninformed comments think they have a right to know.
ReplyDeleteHow does Mr. Jackson's ego get serviced by firing a librarian(along with the entire Board)? And for that matter what other so called improper decisions are you aware of that he has made?
Andrew, Waterloo, ON
You want to bet the reason your business partner isn't talking is because of the lawyers?
ReplyDeleteI know Mr. Jackson thinks he's knows what is best for everyone in regards to amalgamation but he needs to take a step back and reign that ego in before he self-destructs.
First of all I'm not his business partner. There may well be more than one Andrew in Waterloo. I just find it better to not hide behind nameless comments.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, Mr. Jackson is doing what he believes is best for the community not his ego. Having a differing view on topics doesn't mean you should start attacking his character. But again, that's what nameless people do on websites. Look at his track record of community involvement and try and prove otherwise.

ReplyDeleteFrom the article:
Matyas herself said she sees no need for those documents to remain under lock and key.
“I am completely comfortable having a public discussion with the library board about the reasons for my firing, and have no problem with any information from my performance reviews of the last seven years, and documentation related to my merit increases, being shared and discussed,” she said.
“Any of that documentation, I’m happy to have the board share and discuss.”
This behind closed doors nonsense is the same garbage that got Waterloo in trouble with things like RIM park. If Jackson stands behind his decision, then he should come out and say publicly why Matyas was fired.
What you need to understand is that it was a Board decision, not just Jackson. That is why Board's are put in place so that one person does not wield all the power. Secondly you, I and the rest of the community have no right to demand to know what goes on in a work environment. The Library Board has no reason or obligation to tell you anything. End of story.
ReplyDeleteAre you serious?
ReplyDeleteLibrary board is a public institution. Library is funded by public money. The public has EVERY right to know what is going on especially if it is going to cost the taxpayers in excess of $100k.
You may not care how your tax dollars get spent but thar kind of attitude resulted in the RIM park fiasco. I prefer knowledge to ignorance. Sorry about that.
The tax payers put the people in place to run organizations such as the library and should allow them to do so. It is the interference of sideline people that stunt the advancement of communities. Having a right to know is one thing and not allowing people to do their appointed jobs is another and it is a joke.
ReplyDeleteYou are clearly upset about RIM park, I understand that, but don't halt every decision so you can have your say and then expect the volunteers on public Boards to run these organizations on a day to day basis.
No one is asking for decisions to be halted just for the information to be released. That is all that has been asked.
ReplyDeletePeople are asking for clarity, you seem to think that is wrong.
If the board and Tim think they were right in what they did then they should step forward and say so. If there is a legal problem with them doing that then they should say so. Hiding behind a veil of secrecy, especially when the person at the heart of the controversy (Matyas) has said she doesn't mind having the info release just adds to the suspicion and mistrust.
These people were given a civic responsibility to do the right thing in regards to the Waterloo library. They are not doing that by hiding what has happened in this situation. If they are unwilling to do their jobs properly then they should step down or be removed.
Look, the bottom line is that as the Board of a public entity such as the Library Tim and the other members have every right to not discuss matters of personal performances with the public. That is a fact for every Board in a public building.
ReplyDeleteIs the reason you are ultimately angered because they won't share the information that you don't have the right to know or that you simply don't care for Tim Jackson? Perhaps you should take a step back and instead of complaining that they are hiding in a "veil of secrecy" maybe you should commend them for not discussing private matters that may embarrass Ms. Matyas. I am aware she has okayed her performance reviews to be discussed but that does not always tell the whole story. What reason could they possibly have for firing her if they feel she is not best for the library, be realistic.
The clarity that you are asking for is simply not your right to know. That is a fact. No Board has to release information on reviews of employees(even Boards of public entities). Suggesting they should step down from a position they were asked to do on a volunteer basis is absurd.
As you guys may have seen, there's an open to the public meeting on this subject next week. Feb 23rd in the AM.
ReplyDeleteI suggest everyone that's concerned about the issue, or how it was handled by the board be in attendance.
