i received this email from a friend yesterday:
"... trolling thru uptown today, hoping to be hit with a bday present inspiration and I suddenly realized how gross is has become. It is FULL of high end 'boutiques' now. Everything. Yuck."
and this is not from some hippie that works in a coffee shop, this is a professional, middle aged woman who lives in kw, has a double income and good taste.
isn't that supposed to be the uptown demographic?
if they're not appealing to them... who is shopping over there?
i encourage you to weigh in - post a comment.

You're right, I picture her demo loving that stuff - (mostly) independent, high end, uptown girls.
ReplyDeleteThe store that makes me laugh the most is the dog haute couture clothing store (bark and fitz or something?) on willis way.
Overall on an aesthetic/general level, uptown has improved tenfold in the past few years. Although the slab is ugly, the city has done a great job with programming in its early stages. I guess the only real unknown is the success of the businesses, besides starbucks and LCBO of course.
My only potential objection would be that First Gulf is exerting too much... editorial control over its properties. There are still a bunch of few storefronts that haven't seen a tennant yet. They might be keeping out retailers that don't fit their inflated self image.
ReplyDeleteIf nobody's interested in high end doggie treats, the high end doggie treat store will go away. We've still got great shops on that block like Wordsworth Books and Eating Well Organically. I'm happy with how Uptown's been evolving myself.
