"A joyful film essay on the nature of lies, deception, fakery, and thus, the truth, F for Fake finds Welles ruminating on two celebrated “fakers” of the age: art forger Elmyr de Hory, and Clifford Irving, author of a bogus autobiography of Howard Hughes. Welles had long been fascinated both by the illusions he could himself create as both a magician, a filmmaker, and - in the case of his famous 1938 War of the Worlds radio broadcast - storyteller; using de Hory, Irving, and himself as studies, he spends a delightful hour in pursuit of the nature of truth."
