I thought I would add a little bit to your article. I envision the Kwartzlab space as a tool the same as our network access, power tools, the benches and chairs, it is all the same. The object of the space is to facilitate the creativity of our members. the space should challenge and provoke, support and enhance making. I thought that the idea of having works of art in the workshop area where people are working instead of the lounge area would be a departure from the norm that would put the inspirational "tools" close to where the work was being done. So on Dec 26 at Kulture Camp, at the ArtBar, I started talking with Jack and Darin about this concept of having art IN the workspace. We decided to see what it was like so Jack agreed to move his collection to our space as an experiment in workshop/gallery spaces. Three weeks latter and building the infrustucture, figuring out spir of the moment lighting, we came up with this. The frames are 3 feet by 8 feet studs, with metal cloth streched over it to facilitate hanging the art. The frames are built so that they can be hung vertically or horrizontal depending on how Jack laid out his art, because we did not know till yesterday how he would do it. Using scrap angle iron we saved from the buildout, we installed a main hanging rail that the frames hang from, and each panel has a turnbuckle on it to allow for fine adjustment of the hangin so they could all be parallel. The lighting was brilliantly executed by Ed who used our metal shear/bender to build these really elegant brackets that fit on the end of standard armored electrical cable. The lighting really sets off the whole wall. All this in three weeks, with help and energy drinks. It is my hope that with Jack's help we can come up with a template on how to do this again with another artist. The thought of allowing artists to display their works, interact with us in our workspace, is really exciting for all of us at kwartzlab.
I hope this is not too long. Gus - www.kwartzlab.ca
