Now, I know that there is mixed feelings about the slab, but honestly, if you go to an event like this, you really see that its a great spot.
Yes, skateboarders are all over it. Yes, its not overly pleasing to the eye. And true - that bell is... well... A little random. BUT - it is a great public space where you can enjoy some free culture with other like minded individuals. What's wrong with that?
I think one of the most insighful aspects of the slab is the tiered ledges. When there is no one there, its hard to visualize, but it really does make for some great grandstand seating. Not everyone wants to take their 'foldupintoabagcampingchair' with them. This graded seating let's everyone sit down and enjoy what's going on. And side note - the concrete warms up in the sun, and stays warm - so you're not sitting on a freezing seat. Genius.
The opera was ok - not spectacular - but I would go again. The people watching on the other hand WAS spectacular. Crowd was about 75% seniors. 15% couples with babes and the rest was randoms like us.
